Linda Mesaros. Linda Mesaros.

U.S. Consulate Vancouver - The Public Affairs section organized a lecture on energy security at the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) within University of Victoria. British Columbia has long been at the forefront of Canada’s ‘green’ movement, enthusiastically welcomed environmental expert Linda Mesaros.

This activity is part of the large joint effort that the US and Canada make in order to provide a safer future to the next generations. The Canadian audience was clearly curious, and invited Ms. Mesaros to share her extensive experience in the environmental and energy areas. The valuable information she provided about government-led implementation of green procurement programs, contract templates, building community awareness, all resonated with the Canadian audience. For Ms. Mesaros’ presentation follow the PICS website http://www.pics.uvic.ca/events.php.

After Victoria, Public Affairs section brought environment and energy speaker Linda Mesaros to the University of British Columbia to address the Student Business Club. The talk highlighted the role of government as an instrument of positive social change in implementing and carrying out environmental policy.

02-03 October - Amin Tarzi Speaks About Afghanistan

Dr. Amin Tarzi. Dr. Amin Tarzi.

02-03 October, 2008 - Afghan analyst Amin Tarzi directs Middle East Studies at the Marine Corps University. During an October 2-3 visit to Vancouver, he gave a passionate defense for staying the course in Afghanistan in an intense day and a half of meetings with journalists, students, Afghan immigrants and researchers in South Asia. His audiences heard at first hand about Tarzi’s recent trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Tarzi commented that assuaging Pakistan about the disputed border with Afghanistan—by working to eliminate Afghan claims to Pakistani territory-- would be key to future regional stability. He suggested that talk of « winning » the war in Afghanistan is misguided. Rather, we should talk of enabling the Afghan government, army and police to establish order in the country. Tarzi’s visit enabled the Consulate General to make contact with key future opinionmakers, namely the graduate journalism students at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the University of British Columbia (UBC). It also allowed us to continue conversations with Canadian immigrants, in this case members of Vancouver’s Afghan community.
