1491s Leave Them Laughing
21 February 2013
We can laugh with them or at them. The wacky 1491s don’t care as long as we laugh.
The up-and-coming comedy group, known for its hilarious takes on Native American life and culture, came to Vancouver February 21 under the sponsorship of U.S. Consulate General Vancouver. They played to a packed house at Simon Fraser University’s Fletcher Theatre.
The 1491s, represented by Sterlin Harjo of Oklahoma and Migizi Pensoneau and Bobby Wilson of Minnesota, goofed around on stage before the program began, warming up the crowd for an evening of laughter. See photos here.
The group started doing home-grown videos, posted them on YouTube and began creating a grassroots following. Their gigs so far have been mostly to university campuses where on-line roaming students discovered the 1491s’ antics.
This program is part of the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art’s current exhibit, Carrying on Irregardless: Humour in Contemporary Northwest Coast Art.
